Keeping my promise
Tuesday, 10 October 2023 05:06 pmI said that you'll be the first to know if I ever start studying Russian, and here I am writing to keep my promise.
It's hard - and I'm only just beginning to walk this journey! The book I'm studying with (Penguin New Russian Course) even said that the hardest part will be vocabulary, and I couldn't agree more. With Romance and Germanic languages there are so many logical conclusions you can reach to a word's meaning, although sometimes with false friends, but still... I have like 0 knowledge about Italian language other than molto bene and I could guess some word about seeing because of veni vidi vici and vista -- talked about this with my sister as well and got a laugh.
However... With Russian I've only had instances where the similarity was more with Turkish rather than English. (Not something surprising to me, I feel like the more languages I start studying I can draw similarities from each to another.) Ex. газета meaning gazete (newspaper), ванная meaning banyo (bathroom... well, banyo is straight taken up from bagno from Italia but still). But the rest of the words are so unnatural to my mouth, I'm having trouble remembering basic words like "to meet", "to study". It's a bit disheartening, but I try to remember how I felt when I started studying Korean around in 2018.
My memory is a bit hazy, but I remember even struggling with the alphabet, mainly 외 의 and similar sounds... which is very encouraging to think about! I mean, the sounds weren't hard to pronounce -- my problem was to remember how to write them. And that's with Hangul, which is I think may be the best writing system in the world with how easy it is to remember the alphabet! So I want to believe that in a few years, remembering words like Гостиница, знакомиться will be just as natural to me. (Though I'm sure I'll still struggle with the pronouncation >< I feel like I can't practice it with how my home is like...)
I am very excited to continue with it! I don't remember if I mentioned how I went back to studying Japanese, but the website I used to study with changed domains and the entire outlook of the website so now I can't see the hiragana of the kanji I'm not familiar with... so I was pretty disheartened and paused. But a week ago I bought a secondhand Japanese grammar book, and I'm expecting it to arrive by today... hopefully. I'll note how it's going next time then? 🙏
Now that the language talk is over... let me process to talk about... FOOTBALL!!
I think the last time I was this into football was when I was on my last year of middle school LMAOOO. I have a couple of guesses as to why my interest faded when I went into high school: 1. Depression with the circumstances. 2. Being totally obsessed with Star Wars that my entire personality was Luke's biggest fan. But also just... I guess it didn't have the same fun it used to give me. I still watched, checked the scores of how Turkey fared as a national team (spoiler alert: they are not so good. still! :D) and so on, but I remember the day I unfollowed Galatasaray on Instagram lmao 😭
The World Cup in 2022 was a big event worldwide, and I also did the same thing, just casually caught up with it from time to time. Also with the memes I guess 😆🤷♀️ But around last month, I'm not sure how but I regained my interest with football again in like a week. Okay, okay... most of it had to do with Lewandowski I guess. I watched some of his performance and I was very intrigued, and also he's such a handsome man with some cringe. Just how I like my men!!! I missed the (not so) subtle homoeroticism of the sport, the excitement, THE EPIC UPS AND DOWNS OF TURKISH FOOTBALL!!

I tried watching a Turkish leauge match the other day and it was mostly infuriating... so I'll probably stick to just watching Galatasaray's UCL matches. Man, we matched with Bayern in groups. Why do we always have such bad luck? I have like -1000000 faith that we might get even a draw. 😂 We'll see... for now I'm more concerned with Crotia - Turkey match that'll happen in two days. Allah yüzümüzü güldürsün.
Lastly a quick notice: I think my MMA OCs are getting developed faster than my post-WW1 Red vs Whites inspired BL story LOL. Especially about the main character, who I'm thinking of naming Callum McLoren or something like that. Not sure about the surname but I like the name Callum for him. He's basically a former MMA fighter turned burglar turned MMA fighter again :D I have such exciting ideas about him that I best write them down asap bc otherwise I'll forget them mostly!!!
This post was super long -- see you later.
